At the OPA meeting on saturday in London, somebody said they had had a Roux-en-Y done. I wanted to speak to him but whilst chatting to somebody else he left. He said he does not get reflux.

Can anybody else confirm this or not.

I have this option in a few weeks when I'm have 'the op' and would like feedback here on this forum or tel 01634 682596 Keith

Hi Keith, I wasn’t at the recent OPA meeting; however I have had a total gastrectomy two and a half years ago. The surgery involved re-plumbing my insides using the Roux-en-Y procedure.

Initially reflux was a problem for me at night. Sleeping in an inclined position with lots of pillows for support was the answer and trying to stop eating or drinking well before bed time (9pm). Over time the occurrences of reflux have reduced and now I can sleep relatively well with only occasional problems.

When I do wake up with reflux I get up and get something to eat and a very small amount to drink – I’ve tried all sorts of foods but for me dried crunchy type cereal bars work really well (Jordans Crunchy). Just a few bites will do the trick and then back to bed sitting in a fairly upright position until I fall asleep again.

Hope this helps

All the best

I don't know if this is done with the Ivor Lewis procedure, but I have just had this done along with a total Gastrectomy. With this surgery there is no stomach left & hence no acid produced. I do feel bilious if I eat too late & occasionally needed to vomit before I can get comfortable enough to sleep.
