A friend of mine suggested Omeprazole as a solution to my indigestion

which worked wonders from day one.No more problems and I am now eating like a horse.I'm eating things that I had lost my appetite for and have put on

seven pounds in two months.

Dear Graham

That's good news! Well done!

Just for general information, omeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) and is now a commonly prescribed medication. It stops the stomach from producing stomach acid, so for many people it works a treat. It is used for heartburn cases as well; and for those who have had the valve between their oeosphagus and stomach removed whereby there is no longer a barrier for stomach acid spashing up into the oesophagus.

If you are on a PPI for a long period, it is quite a good idea to review your continuing need for it with your doctor every so often. If you stop taking it there can be a 'bounce' effect when the body notices the change in chemical balance in the digestion system, and produces acid reflux temporarily. Having gaviscon, which is an alginate (that creates a protective raft for a few hours) can be useful for these times.

The other thing to bear in mind is that a PPI works against stomach acid, but bile, that tastes even more revolting, is an alkali, so I do not think that PPIs are effective against bile.

Please excude the digression - I did not mean to turn a success into a problem!

I'm taking Omeprazole morning & night after surgery which works but do not take Gaviscon within 2 hours as it negates the effects of Omeprazole. Chemist told me this, not the doctors!

Great news pleased for you. Hopefully help others if they are not aware it works. Good to take on board what alan has said after a long period. Good Luck! Enjoy the good life!!

I am on Omeprazole, because they had to remove the valve between my oesophagus and stomach when they removed the tumour. I have been told not to take indigestion tablets of any sort, because they counteract the Omeprazole. Can confirm AlanM's comments re bile, I often wake up with bile in my mouth and it is foul. When I first came home and was back eating the bile would cause me to heave and vomit. This was happening 3/4 nights a week, but now this happens only once every three weeks or so and is more down to what I have eaten rather than the bile..

Bile - I had my gallbladder removed April 2014 on occasions if I have not eaten for 3 hours or more. I find when I do eat the food hits the bile and it goes straight out as diahorrea within 30 minutes of eating. Not sure I have reflux bile though? My digestive system just grumpy from the start of swallowing right through to exit.

Glad tablet works for you!
